Our Verdict

The AND1 Rise is the right choice for players who have rolled an ankle before or who play an aggressive inside game. The mid-top collar meaningfully limits ankle inversion without sacrificing court feel. It's 0.8 oz heavier than the Attack and $5-10 more expensive — a fair trade for ankle security. Guards who value pure agility should stick with the Attack.

Pros
  • Padded ankle collar effectively limits ankle roll on cuts
  • Slightly better cushioning than Attack — more insole padding
  • Stable base — ideal for post players and forwards
  • Same reliable herringbone outsole as Attack
Cons
  • 0.8 oz heavier than Attack — noticeable in longer sessions
  • Outsole slightly thinner than Zone — wears faster outdoors
  • Less lateral agility vs low-top Attack
  • Ankle collar can feel stiff first 3-4 sessions

Testing Notes

Ankle Containment — Key Finding

During lateral defensive slides and sharp backdoor cuts, the ankle collar provided noticeable support compared to low-tops. In one session with a strong ball handler, we simulated 3 near-ankle-roll situations — the Rise contained all three. This is not a guarantee, but it's meaningful for recreational players who've experienced ankle issues.

Traction — Slightly Below Attack

The herringbone pattern is similar to the Attack but slightly shallower in the heel area. Indoor traction is excellent. Outdoor performance is adequate but the thinner heel outsole shows wear at around 15 outdoor hours. We'd rate the Rise primarily for indoor use.

Break-in Period

The ankle collar feels stiff for the first 3-4 sessions. Some players report mild rubbing at the ankle bone during break-in. Wearing with ankle socks during this period helps. After the break-in, the collar conforms to your ankle profile and becomes comfortable for full sessions.

"Sprained my ankle last year in low-tops and switched to the Rise. Haven't had a problem since. The ankle support feels real — not just marketing. Traction is great on my gym's old wood floors. Would buy again."

"Decent shoe for the price. The ankle collar took a few games to stop feeling stiff but now it's comfortable. My only complaint is it feels a bit heavy compared to my old Nikes. But those were $90 — at this price, the Rise is excellent value."
